Student-led Away Day

Student-led Away Day 2025

The student-led Away Day in May 2025 was dedicated to “Careers beyond Academia” and took place at QMUL’s Charterhouse Square Campus. Skills trainer and comedian Dr Steve Cross was invited to run a networking workshop and give a keynote talk about careers outside academia in the morning.

In the afternoon, PGRs had the opportunity to talk to alumni and guests from a variety of professional backgrounds, such as Healthcare Consultant, Investment Banker, Microscopy Facility Manager and many more, at the Careers Fair, followed by a  networking session.

Student-led Away Day 2023

The student-led Away Day in October 2023 focused on communication and networking. The day started with a media training session provided by Media Women, who have earned an incredible reputation preparing scientists for media communications, receiving the Royal Society Athena Prize in recent years for their first-class training.

The PGRs were then joined by Dr Catherine Green OBE who played an important role in the development of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and has featured on many different television and radio interviews. She is also co-author, with Professor Sarah Gilbert, of the book Vaxxers: A pioneering moment in scientific history, where they describe the race to develop a vaccine to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
